LaCie D2 Upgraded With Thunderbolt 2

LaCie updated its D2 desktop storage hard drives, adding an aluminum unibody, dual Thunderbolt 2 ports, and an optional SSD upgrade. Aimed at graphic designer professionals, the device comes with lots of extra storage space in a compact package.

It comes equipped with up to 6 TB, 7200 RPM Seagate hard disk with upgrade option which increases speeds up to 1150MB/s and adds 128GB of PCIe storage. The SSD upgrade is an additional purchase.

The LaCie D2 Thunderbolt 2 has many plus features as its top storage space, fast performance, the option of hosting an SSD Upgrade drive within its compact design and its Thunderbolt 2 and USB 3.0 support.

While it has few drawbacks as it’s very expensive with a short warranty of just three-years also its SSD Upgrade kit is hard to install and will remove the USB 3.0 port. At the cost of $300, this new D2 drive is one of the most expensive single-volume external hard drives in the market.

The internal hard drive inside has the cap speed of just 6Gbps, much lower than 20Gbps of the Thunderbolt 2 standard. The new D2 is the first single-volume external hard drive that supports Thunderbolt 2 standard. The D2 can be used in a daisy-chain setup, with its two Thunderbolt 2 ports on its will work with other Thunderbolt 2 devices without slowing them down.

With its chassis made out of a single piece of aluminum, the D2 is compact and just slightly larger than a standard hard drive. Its permanent stand makes it work in the vertical position and many little rubber feet are there to cancel out the vibrations of the internal drive, and keeps the drive stay put on a surface. is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Read about our Affiliates Disclosure Policy here.
