Sony launches e-ink Smartwatch Project on crowdfunding site

Sony is going to launch e-ink smartwatch and has named it FES Watch. But most surprising news is Sony hid its smartwatch on a crowdfunding site Makuake for couple of months and is raising funds for it smartwatch.

The Sony new e-ink smartwatch which is being promoted as Fashion Entertainments Watch or FES watch has raised $20,000 at the crowdfunding site whereas the goal was $8500.

The reason behind the cover name of Fashion Entertainments instead of Sony was to check the interest of general public in the product and guessing the market interest, which seems to payoff Sony.

We hid Sony’s name because we wanted to test the real value of the product, whether there will be demand for our concept,”

one of the project’s coordinators told the Wall street Journal.

The FES Watch will be released by May 2015 and the initial price tag will be $167 according to the site. Sony has yet not given any official sign that they own this device and what are their future planning yet.

The thin smartwatch, which looks like a wristwatch uses e-ink to change its colors, interface and wrist band as well. The battery will last for 60 days as per the sources. There will be some 24 design patterns like shown below and you will find the color of band of the watch changing as well.

The idea of e-ink devices will not be limited to watches only. The team working on the FES watch is also developing other e-ink items like bow ties, paper holders and hat accessories. The real idea behind the e-ink is to re-define the traditional e-paper market.
