Sony has officially announced that a new PlayStation is in the works. The company is planning on making the latest console a more powerful version of PlayStation 4. The console will be designed for games with heavy graphics, it will be able to handle higher end-game experiences and will also provide better support for virtual reality.
Sony’s current console; the PlayStation 4 has sold more than 36 million units worldwide. Owners of the PS4 will have to buy the new console if they want to experience enhanced graphics and power especially if they are interested in virtual reality. It is assumed that the new model would share the similar software, with only minor modifications. The real change would be that the new console will provide more power for running PlayStation’s virtual reality headset.
The new console is likely to be unveiled before the release of PlayStation VR, which is set to launch in October. The model will be able to support ultra high-definition-resolution graphics. It will also be upgraded to provide more power for PlayStation VR. PlayStation VR is a console-based virtual reality headset while it’s competitors are PC based like the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive.
Typically, upgraded video game consoles release every six to seven years. The PS2 was released in 2000, PS3 in 2006, and the PS4 in 2013. Competitor companies like Microsoft and Nintendo also follow similar release cycles. But recently Microsoft has also indicated that it has plans to launch upgrades of the Xbox One. The upgrades would allow better integration between the console and Windows 10.
“We will see more hardware innovation in the console space than we have ever seen, You’ll actually see us come out with new hardware capability during a generation allowing the same games to run backward and forward compatible.” said Phil Spencer head of Xbox.
Nintendo new games platform, code-named “NX” is also in development. There haven’t been any details released about the platform but, according to analysts, it could be launched in October. Nintendo has yet to pass a comment on its console release cycle.
With the upgraded console Sony aims to attract gamers willing to pay for a high-end virtual reality experience, accompanied by a richer game environment. Sony is expected to be one of the top leaders in the virtual reality market this year according to analysts. The PlayStation VR is priced at the starting rate of $399. Oculus Rift and HTC Vive are more expensive, they are priced at $599 and $799 respectively.
