Sony Xperia X Premium rumored to feature 1.07-billion color depth display

Sony introduced its Sony Xperia X devices in February. But the company has been quiet since then. However, it turns out that Sony’s smartphone department has been quite busy behind closed doors. The company is reportedly working on a smartphone  with a brilliant display.

According to the latest rumours, the Xperia X series is expected to include a new device. The device will be called Xperia X Premium. Reportedly it will feature a 5.5 inch Whitemagic LCD display. It will feature a face melting 1300 nits maximum brightness output. These days top-shelf smartphones offer a maximum of 800 units. The device’s resolution is expected to be 1080p.

Furthermore, Xperia X Premium smartphone is supposed to be the world’s first device with HDR (High Dynamic Display) screen. Rumours indicate that the device will also feature an unfathomable color depth of 1.07 billion colors. Currently, devices support a mere 16.8 million color depth. Instead of using up to 256 shades for each primary color (Red, Green, and Blue), the display will paint RGB colors with up to 1024 shades each.

The screen will likely be a product of collaboration between Sony and Japan Display Incorporated. Moreover, the display screen is also rumoured to have a refresh rate of 120 Hz. Allegedly, the contrast ratio will be 2000:1, which is expensive UHD TV set territory.

The rumored display of the Xperia X Premium if real will be staggering technological achievement. Although, high brightness output increased color depth, and high refresh rate doesn’t necessarily guarantee a quality image reproduction. But, the rest of the device’s specifications indicate that the smartphone performance will be up to par.

According to the rumors, the smartphone will be powered by Qualcomm’s top-tier chipset, the Snapdragon 820. The device is also said to feature 3GB of RAM along with a high-speed USB Type-C port. This means the Xperia X Premium might deserve a place in the big leagues with the Galaxy S7 duo, the LG G5, and the HTC 10.
