Microsoft wants to embed secondary screens into smartphone flip covers

Microsoft is reportedly working on a flip cover for smartphones that will include a secondary screen. The secondary screen on the smartphone flip cover will be always-on and with low-power display for multiple uses. The flip cover can add new functions and possibilities besides the impressive looks that you can get on any flip cover.

The snaps of the proposed Microsoft secondary screen flip cover show its several functions. The secondary screen on the flip cover is almost of the same size as the original screen of the device it accompanies. Unlike the conventional flip covers it works like an accessory. But here again, unlike casual accessories a flip can turn into multiple things, as expressed by Microsoft.

As showed in the snap the flip cover can also operate like a full QWERTY keyboard. You can put your device in landscape mode and start typing right on your device’s flip cover. It will also display notifications in detail as you get them on your device’s display.  And just being another display, it will give you several additional uses. For instance, you can open up a full calendar that will help you composing emails.

The secondary display is not a new thing on smartphones but Microsoft comes up with its own concept of using the flap cover as secondary screen. Currently the Russian YotaPhone started using the concept on its smartphones. But unlike the Microsoft concept, the secondary screen on the YotaPhone devices is embedded on the back of device.

As reports suggest the concept is right now being considered by the Microsoft research division. However, Microsoft research is reportedly in talks with its Lumia division for any possible application of the concept on the devices. Yet there are no further details out, but with reports about emerging Microsoft device in the market, more details are expected to come out.
