Introduction
iOS is the famous mobile device operating system which has been around for quite some time now. The iOS 9 has been developed by Apple Inc. which stands as the 9th of the iOS series of operating system. It was released on September 16th 2015. iOS 8 was its immediate predecessor. To date, iOS 9 is installed on the 52% of the devices that run on iOS.
There is a range of platforms that uses iOS 9. iPhone 4-6 series, iPad 2, iPad Air, iPad Air 2, iPad mini, iPad mini 2,iPad mini 3,iPad mini 4 and iPad pro are to name a few. iOS 9 comes with new improved applications. These new apps make it possible to view the news directly from NYT and CNN. For the time being, this feature is available in the United Kingdom and United States only.
The latest sophisticated QWERTY allows lower case and upper case letters with the help of shift key. The Notes app is wonderfully designed to provide the facility to draw sketches and straight lines. Attachments such as images, links, audio and documents can also be added. Advanced formatting options are available. A 3D touch (available in iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus) is a peculiarity to iOS 9. A lot of improvements like battery life and security protocols have been included in the iOS 9. Moreover, an iCloud App can be found with the tile name iCloud Drive.
iOS 9 has been designed to ensure Multitasking. Subsequent features are improved in respect to iOS 8. Split view and Picture in Picture are the most significant examples of iOS 9 multitasking. Multitasking features allow you to play more than one applications at a time.
The Split View in iOS 9
The split-screen feature is termed as “Split View” in the iOS 9. Split View signifies the multitasking in the operating system. However, less encouraging news is: It only works with iPad Air 2 and iPad pro! The beauty of Split View is that you can use and view more than one application at the same time without dropping their functionality. The other App can be opened simultaneously in one third of the screen. You can pick your desired App from the list of Apps view in the split view and resize them.
This makes the user very excited as he can use the multiple apps together to satisfy his desire while keeping efficiency. Therefore it is easier to switch between the two operational applications. This Multitasking makes you very productive indeed. Watching videos has never been more fun while preparing your work schedule.
A worth mentioning point: The interaction for a user with two operating applications in the split view, is limited. For example you can copy and paste some text from an app to another. Though the feature has its limitations, it is fun to use.
Picture in Picture
Picture in Picture is abbreviated to PiP. This feature is well-known to those who have worked in film/television industry. This feature allows playing multiple programs or channels at the same time on the screen. The history of PiP is very old as in 1983; the first consumer based PiP technology was introduced. However, it was very costly because there were analog televisions at that time.
One channel or program can be viewed as full screen while others are displayed in small windows. The sound can only come from the program opened in the full screen only. It takes more than one tuner to supply multiple pictures. A VCR, DVD player or a cable box can be attached to view the pictures in PiP mode.
Shhh: it was uncommon in 1980s. These days it is not! You might have seen on your television screens; CNN or FOX telecasting live from two different cameras at the same time. iOS 9 has been designed this way!
PiP Picture in picture is also sometimes called PbP (Picture by picture). The amazing technology is bound to surprise the users by delivering the visual and audio (combined) to its users. Same sound will come from your television (to your family) and headphones (to you, obviously if you are wearing them).
The Home button makes it possible for videos to be played seamlessly without being skipped or pausing.
The method for using the PiP is to select any video of your choice and play the video. Once the video has started playing, you can tap the picture in picture button on the bottom of your screen. You can also do the same by pressing the home button after starting your video. This brings excitement as now you can view the video in a small window alongside with other apps covering the rest of the screen.
It is also possible to browse internet while playing your favorite videos. Use the PiP feature as described above and resize the window as you wish to. Though, bad news for the iPad 2, 3rd generation, 4th generation, and iPad mini will not be able to use these multitasking features. Guys, do not cry! Bring on some cash and buy latest iPad.
The back button added to the top left corner for switching back to the previous App. This is required when another app is opened due to banner notifications.
